CSU student Buck McDaniel tweets a symphony
Buck McDaniel, a music composition major at Cleveland State University, is the Tchaikovsky of the Twitterverse.
He recently contributed an original piece titled “Among the Multitude” to the repertoire of TwtrSymphony, an online collective dedicated to reimagining orchestral music for the social-media age. Taking a cue from Twitter, where tweets are limited to a maximum of 140 characters, TwtrSymphony champions succinct musical pieces that are only 140 seconds long or less.
When TwtrSymphony issued a call for new musical entries, McDaniel started thinking big — or, rather, small. He took the title of his pocket symphony from a Walt Whitman poem.
“I was trying to make a truly musical tweet,” McDaniel said. “On Twitter, each individual person, even the spammers, contributes something to this bigger network of human beings, which is a beautiful concept. In orchestral music, it’s similar, because each instrument has its own distinct voice. With my piece, I tried to give each instrument its own music while having it fit into a larger tapestry, which to me is how social networking in general functions.”
The musicians of TwtrSymphony plan to collaborate on a new recording of “Among the Multitude” for an upcoming compilation album.
