CSU standout Niki Zmij runs with the wind
Niki Zmij is generating quite a buzz. This on-the-go dynamo is an MBA student at Cleveland State University’s Monte Ahuja College of Business Administration. She also happens to be CEO of Amplified Wind Solutions, an up-and-coming clean-tech company.
Amplified Wind Solutions was launched last year to commercialize a wind-amplification system developed by Dr. Majid Rashidi, chair of CSU’s Engineering Technology Department. By using cylindrical structures to deflect wind into turbines, the system can produce up to six times more energy than conventional wind turbines. Amplified Wind Solutions plans to adapt the technology to power telecom towers.
With Zmij at the helm, Amplified Wind Solutions won second place in the 2012 Northeast Ohio Entrepreneur Expo’s Student Business Contest. Earlier this year, the company took first place at the Ohio Clean Energy Challenge and advanced to the regional Clean Energy Challenge in Chicago, where Zmij last month won the “Breaking Barriers” Award for being an outstanding female entrepreneur.
“I was definitely surprised,” Zmij told the Techli blog. “It was amazing to be welcomed onstage by a group of such strong, successful and intelligent women.”
